Ankle · Colour · Photo

A leg wearing black strappy heels shows a colour cartoon tiger leaping down the front of the ankle, with orange and black stripes and a white muzzle. Below it, a small cartoon boy with spiky blond hair and a red top stands on the top of the foot beside a thin blue shadow line. Partial lines of quote lettering are visible on the other ankle in black ink.

The snow had stopped by the time Tomas dragged the old sledge out past the bins on Harrow Lane. The streetlamps had gone the colour of weak tea, and above the chimney pots something orange was yawning, a low grumble that came down the drainpipe like a bassoon with a cold. Nobody else on the street heard it. Nobody else on the street had ever been allowed to.

'Hobbes,' he hissed, which was a mistake, because hissing at a tiger only makes him bounce. The tiger came down the wall in three gleeful leaps, claws ticking on the brickwork, and landed in the gutter with a splash of slush that soaked the toe of Tomas's left boot. 'You said you'd come sledging,' said Tomas. 'I said I might,' said the tiger, 'which is what you say when you mean yes and want to be asked twice.'

They hauled the sledge up Scarper Hill, past the dark shop with the broken clock and the bakery that smelled of tomorrow's bread. At the top the whole city lay below them in lamplit squares, every window a small square of someone else's evening. The tiger sat astride the back of the sledge, tail flicking, and explained that the best part of sledging was the bit before the bottom, when you could still pretend the bottom was only a rumour.

They went down faster than anything should go down a hill. The sledge hit the bottom, slewed, and stopped with its nose against a lamp post. Tomas looked back up the slope and saw two tracks in the snow: one thin and blue, a pencil line from his heel, and one wide and furrowed with enormous paw prints that went all the way back up to the rooftops. 'Same again tomorrow?' he asked. 'Only if you bring the sledge,' said the tiger, already halfway up the lamp post, 'and only if you let me steer.'
