Cat in a heart with moon and stars on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cat's face in outline sits in the lower right of a heart-shaped panel on the inner forearm. The heart's background is filled with stippled dotwork shading that fades towards the edges, and a crescent moon and small four-pointed sparkle stars sit around the cat. The image is in black and grey, with a plain grey background behind the arm.

The night the power failed on Harrow Street, Mrs Adebayo sent her grandson out with a torch and a tin of tuna, because the cat from number nine had been yowling at the shutters since dusk. Tobias found the animal under the fishmonger's awning, its fur soaked flat, one ear torn at the tip. He crouched in the drizzle and offered the tuna on the lid of the tin. The cat considered him the way a landlord considers a late rent.

He had expected it to bolt. Instead it ate, and then it sat down on his trainers and began to purr loud enough to hear over the rain drumming the market stalls. Above them the streetlamps had gone out, but the sky had cleared in a rough patch over the rooftops, and a thin crescent moon hung there with a few hard stars scattered round it like pins in a cushion.
When the lights came back at midnight, Tobias was still on the kerb. The cat had not moved, and neither had he. Mrs Adebayo found them there at half past one, the boy soaked through, the animal curled in his lap as if it had been waiting all its life for the right lap to turn up. She said nothing about the tuna. She only put the kettle on and left the back door open, the way she always did for strays that had decided, without asking anyone, where they belonged.
