Cat outline and Meow script on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a simple outline of a cat's head with two dot eyes, a small smile, and whiskers drawn in single black lines. The word Meow sits beneath it in flowing script, with the cat's outline curving behind the lettering. The ink is solid black on pale skin against a plain light background, with even, consistent linework.

The cat came down the quay steps the morning after the storm, as if she had been sent to count the boats. Nobody in Porthgarrow claimed her. Mrs Tregenza at the chandlery called her Dorcas, the gutting boys called her Sixpence, and she answered to neither, only to the knock of a hull against the harbour wall.

People remarked on her smile. She had a way of narrowing her eyes at the fleet as it went out, a look that said she knew which men would come back and which would not, and she would not say. Old Harold Pardoe swore she had sat on the bow of the Constance the night before her keel split, and that she had walked off the wet wood without so much as a damp paw. He took it as a warning. He didn't sail that week.
Then the autumn the herring failed, Eliza Quick's brother went out in the Mary Jane anyway, and the cat sat on the wall outside the Quick cottage and would not move. She washed her face, she yawned, she watched the empty sea. When the lamp was lit at the lookout she stood, stretched, and let out one long meow that rolled across the water like a bell.
The Mary Jane came in at dawn with her nets torn and her crew soaked and cursing, and not a life lost. Eliza carried a dish of pilchards down to the wall. The cat ate, licked her whiskers, and went on along the quay as if she had only been passing.
