Chibi cartoon boy with round glasses

Colour · Photo

A large-eyed chibi-style cartoon boy with spiky black hair and round glasses fills most of the frame, wearing a red and gold scarf over a dark jumper. He holds a glowing golden ball and a thin stick, with small gold stars at the left edge. The linework is bold and dark with soft shading on the hair and face, and the palette mixes orange skin tones, green eyes and gold accents against the surrounding skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry-keepers of Low Cairn had a rule that no child crossed the salt flats after the second bell. So when Oswin Fenn came running at the third, scarf trailing and his round spectacles fogged from the damp, nobody stopped him. They were too busy watching the light. It hung above the flats like a dropped lamp, gold and humming, drifting towards the wreck of the old orbital lift, where children were forbidden to play.

Oswin had found it himself three nights before, when the tide was out and the sky was thick with dust from the mines beyond the ridge. He had picked up a stick of ash-wood, the length of his forearm, and pointed it at the ball the way his gran pointed at a kettle she wanted boiled. "Come on, then," he said. The ball came. It sat in his palm warm as bread, and when he turned it, a low hum rose and three stars the size of thumbnails blinked on the air beside it.

Now the lift's cable was singing and the ball was pulling towards it, and Oswin understood that it was not lost but lonely. The old machines had kept something company for three hundred years, and the thing was homesick. He walked out across the flats with his stick held high, counting his steps as his gran had taught him, past the drowned pylons and the rusted hulls, until the dark of the wreck swallowed him whole.

He came back at dawn. Mabry Tull, who had waited on the gate all night, saw him first, his scarf dusty and his spectacles clean. "Did it go?" she asked. He shook his head and held out his hand. The golden ball sat on his palm, dimmer now and quiet. "It wanted someone to walk it home," he said. "So I said I would." Every night since, when the second bell goes, Oswin walks the flats with the light in his pocket, and the stars go on ahead of him, and Low Cairn sleeps easier for knowing he is out there.
