In the reed country below Maro, where the river ran brown every spring, there lived a ferryman called Tennet who could not speak. He did not need to. Each dawn, before the mist lifted off the water, he walked the bank and pressed a hollow reed into the wet silt, drawing the river's rise and fall in one unbroken line. Peak and trough. The fishermen read those marks the way other folk read the sky, and they cast their nets or kept them dry accordingly.

The village put it down to luck, until the widow Ysolt came to the landing one morning with a cake of red ochre wrapped in linen. Her grandson had taken a boat out on the flood tide and not come back. She asked Tennet to show her what the water had done in the night. He drew it for her. She laid her thumb on the sharpest spike of the line, where the silt had been torn, and waited for him to tell her something she could bear to hear.

Tennet took the ochre from her, knelt, and pressed a small heart beside the line, just where the water had turned back. Then he pointed upstream, toward the reeds where the boat would have snagged, and pushed his ferry out into the grey light with her sitting in the stern.

By noon the river had settled and the line lay flat in the silt, but the red heart stayed where he had put it, and the fishermen still call that bend the turning place.
