The big wheel had stalled twice by the time Lottie Vane came looking for me behind the dodgems, holding a chewed biro and a paper napkin with four shapes sketched on it: a looped figure of eight, a feather, a lopsided heart and a shamrock she had coloured in with the wrong green. I was painting the lettering on the ghost train's board and told her I was busy.

"Draw them on me," she said, "and I'll stay till they fade." I explained that the fair never stays anywhere, that we pulled up stakes at Ely on Monday and would be in Spalding by Wednesday. She didn't care. She pushed up her sleeve and held out her wrist, so I put the feather down first, because feathers forgive a moving surface.

After that she came back every evening with another mark. Birds for the swallows nesting in the tea tent roof, a diamond for the card sharp who taught her a three-card trick, a tiny anchor for her dad, who had sailed the Baltic before he took up minding the generators. By Saturday her wrists held the whole season in faint blue lines, and the ink smudged a little every time she washed her hands in the bucket by the candyfloss.

On Monday we struck the tents at first light and I found the napkin folded in my coat pocket. Lottie had added one last mark in her own hand, a small star beside the infinity sign, and under it, in capitals pressed hard enough to tear the paper: NOT GOODBYE, JUST THE NEXT TOWN.
