Covered bridge and autumn trees in state outline
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A realistic tattoo shows a red covered bridge over green grass, set beneath trees with orange, red and green autumn foliage. The scene is contained within a large state-shaped outline that fills the skin. The shading is smooth and detailed, with a blue sky at the top and a bold, clean edge around the outline.

The ovens were up to heat by four, and the back door stuck the way it always did in October, the damp swelling the frame until I had to put my hip against it. Outside, the lane was still black. I could smell the river before I could see it, cold stones and wet leaves, and I knew the maples on the hill would be turning now that the nights had dropped below the point where anyone pretended otherwise.

Ruth Calloway came in at quarter past with her coat buttoned wrong, as she had every Saturday since her husband died. She didn't want a loaf. She wanted to watch me shape one, and to tell me the bridge was due its red paint again, that the council had argued about the shade for two years and settled on the colour it had been when she was a girl. I told her the bread would be out at half five. She said she knew, and sat on the flour sacks anyway.
When the first loaf came out of the oven I wrapped it in a clean tea towel without thinking, and Ruth took it from me and said it was for the rail on the bridge, the one over the water, where her husband used to leave crusts for the ducks. I didn't ask why it had to be warm. I walked up the lane with the bundle under my arm while the sky went from iron to a pale, clean blue above the ridge. The trees on the far bank had caught fire overnight, red and orange, with green still holding on below them.
I set the loaf on the rail. Steam lifted off the towel and drifted up into the branches, and behind me the bakery lights came on one by one, the way they always did, as if the town was waking up just to see what I'd do next.
