The frog had been sitting on the spade handle since the rain stopped, and you had been trying to ignore it for an hour. Your grandmother's walled garden was never built for working in. Brambles had got into the rhubarb, the bed by the wall had gone to bindweed, and somewhere under all of it, she had told you once, lay the small iron crown her husband buried the week he proposed, so the ground would know who had the right to it.

You found it in the third trench, face down under a clump of wet chickweed, its points furred with rust. It was lighter than it should have been. Wedged inside the cup was a square of card gone soft as cloth, and on it, in her careful pencil, a heart drawn inside a five-sided frame, the same shape as the flagstone you were kneeling on. Beneath it she had written: not for keeping, for planting.

So you planted it. You dug the hole beside the rhubarb, set the card face up, and two dry seeds rattled out of the crown's bent points and landed on the soil like a pair of full stops. You pressed them in with your thumb, watered them from the tin can, and went home before dark. By August there were two purple shoots standing either side of the rhubarb, and the frog had come back to sit on the spade, looking as though it had never left.
