A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seed swap happened on the first Saturday of April, when the frost had finally given up on the bottom field at Cressy Lane. Dorrie Pask brought a biscuit tin of runner bean seed she had saved from her mother's plot, and I brought a jar of chutney nobody had asked for. We traded on the bench by the water butt, which is where the real business of the allotments gets done.

Dorrie had a habit of pressing her thumb into the soil before she planted anything, testing it the way some people test bread. "Green for going," she said, tapping the tin, "red for staying." She meant the beans, which would race up the canes, and the tomatoes we'd set in the cold frame. I thought it was sentimental nonsense until August, when the bean row had gone wild over the fence and the Gardener's Delight had split on the vine after a week of rain.

She moved to Leeds that autumn for a job at the hospital, and the tin came to me with a note wedged under the lid. It said only: Plant the green ones first. The red ones wait for you to decide.

This April I walked up Cressy Lane with the tin under my arm and the bench still wet from the night. I sowed the beans in a neat line, watered them in, and tied the first cane with a strip of green twine. Then I went back to the cold frame, found the tomato seedlings I'd been too scared to move, and tied those with red. I left the tops of both canes open, in case.
