Cupcake and cherry with a Life is Sweet banner

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A cupcake with pink piped frosting, multicoloured sprinkles and a glossy red cherry with a green stem sits above a tan banner that reads Life is Sweet. The shading is smooth and soft, with highlights on the cherry and frosting and a dark chocolate-brown base for the sponge. The cupcake liner is teal and blue, and a small green shadow sits beneath it on the skin.

Still, the cupcakes sold. Dora piped pink frosting in tight swirls, shook hundreds and thousands from the tin her mother had kept, and pressed a glacé cherry on top of every one, stem and all. The teal paper cases came in boxes of two hundred from a supplier in Leeds, and she ordered more whenever the summer visitors started parking on the front.

One morning a lad from the timber yard came in with his coat buttoned wrong and asked for a cake that was not for anyone in particular. She gave him two and would not take his coins.

The next week he came back with the money knotted in a handkerchief and a folded note in capitals. It said his nan had eaten the first one in bed and asked if the shop was still open. Dora read it twice, took the cherry off the last cake in the tray, and put the stone in her apron pocket. Then she turned the card in the window to Open.
