Small pink cupcake tattoo on the hand
Hand · Colour · Photo
A small cartoon-style cupcake sits on the skin of a hand, with a swirled pink frosting top and a yellow band beneath it. The purple wrapper is shaded with lighter vertical stripes and outlined in dark ink. The tattoo is shown close up against a plain background, with a red-tipped finger at the left edge of the frame.

The oven on Deck Nine had been dead since the second spring, so when the pressure gauge finally ticked over I didn't trust it. Nobody on the Caspian Drift had eaten anything sweet in eleven years. I scraped the last of the algae flour out of its tin, cracked two protein eggs grown in the tank by the lift, and whisked them with a fork I had bent into a whisk shape years ago.

The wrappers were the real problem. The printers had gone with the power cells, so I used purple dye from the lichen vats, boiled down until it stopped stinking. I pressed each case into the tray with my thumb, ribbed it with the back of a spoon, and counted the ridges twice because the pattern had to be right. Then came the frosting: beet pulp and a squeeze of citrus gel, piped through a ration pouch with the corner snipped off. It rose in a tall swirl, pink as a warning light.
Ren from hydroponics found me at the hatch just after midnight, nose already twitching. She didn't say anything. She took the first one, turned it over in her hands as if it might be a trick, and bit the top off in one neat motion. Her eyes closed. For a moment the whole corridor smelled like a town nobody aboard had ever seen.
She asked where I'd learned to make them. I told her from a picture in an old book, a cartoon with a yellow band of sponge at its base, though I never found the book again. She laughed and licked her thumb. We ate the rest standing in the dark, and I kept the last one wrapped in a square of clean cloth. Tomorrow I would have to fix the oven. Tonight the tray was empty, and nobody on the ship wanted anything more than another one.
