Hello Kitty cupcake with lollipop

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty character with a purple bow sits on top of a pink swirled frosting cupcake. The cupcake has a blue and white striped case, with yellow and pink accents, and a rainbow swirl lollipop sits at the left edge. Bold black outlines and soft shading sit against scattered pastel dots, all in colour.

The cat arrived at the back step just as I finished piping the last pink swirl onto the cupcake, and it hopped up onto the frosting as if it had been ordered. Nobody in Hollin Edge owns a cat that white. Nobody owns a bow that lilac, either, though Mrs Pell at the post office has tried to buy one off the market stall for her niece.

"You are short of lollipops," it said, in the flat, polite voice of someone reading a menu. I told it the sugar jar was on the counter and the shop had closed at four. The cat looked past me at the wood, where the birches leaned in close as if listening, and shook its head. Grandmother had a rule about the forest's edge: the wood gives you one thing and takes one thing back, and you must never ask which is which.

"Then I'll pay you in sweets," it said, and produced from nowhere a lollipop swirled rainbow-bright and shaped like a heart, its stick a bramble twig with the thorns sanded off. I took it. It tasted of wet moss and the first rain after a dry summer. When I looked up, the cat had eaten the pink frosting from one side, neat as a spoon, and left the paper case striped blue and white in the sun.

"What do you take back?" I asked.

"Only the dots," it said, and stepped down into the grass. Where it had walked, the dew lit up in small pastel circles, teal and lemon and rose, and they drifted off between the trunks like spilt sprinkles.

Every morning since, I leave a cupcake on the step with a blue ribbon round its case. By afternoon it is always gone, and the wood has one more colour in it.
