Dance script word on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black script word reading dance sits on the inner forearm, with a long descending stroke extending below the letter D. The linework is thin and even, with no visible shading, and the ink appears to be a single dark tone. The skin fills most of the frame, with a soft, blurred background at the edges.

Dearest Wren,

The frost came early to Hollin Vale this year, and the river has gone to glass below the mill. Father has stopped playing the fiddle at supper, so Mother hums instead, badly, and nobody corrects her. I think we are all waiting for word from you about the Court of Tessaly, where they say the ballroom floor is laid over a cistern so the music rings up through the boards.
Your last letter had only one word on the back of the page, written large and slanted as though you had run out of ink halfway. Dance. I read it a dozen times by the stove before I understood you meant it as an instruction, not a memory. Mrs Ashdown has taken your place at the dye vats, and she swears she will not let me near the good indigo until I have learned to keep my feet still.
So I went down to the mill race on Thursday, when nobody was watching, and tried the step you taught me under the willow. The ice cracked under my heel and I laughed so hard I nearly went in. I think that was the first dance I have ever danced in my life.
Tell the Tessaly musicians I am coming in spring, with my own shoes and a long stroke of ink on my hem for luck. Mother says to wrap your feet in flannel. I say the boards will hold.
Your loving sister, Ilse
