Dog outline and red heart on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A single-line outline of a sitting dog in black ink sits on the side of a finger, with a small solid red heart to its upper right. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the red fill is the only colour. The background is out of focus, keeping attention on the tattoo.

Dear Nell,

The dog came aboard at Tilbury with a length of rope round his neck and a face like a wet sack, and the bosun swore he'd have him over the side before Biscay. He never went over. He sat on the hatch cover every watch, one ear up, looking aft the way we all do, as if the wake might hand back something we'd dropped. Mr Pargeter named him Tally because he kept better count of the bells than any of us.
On the long leg south the cook scalded his hand on the galley range, and the dog stayed beside him all night without barking, just resting his nose against the bandage. In the morning the cook gave him a scrap of the captain's ham and drew a small red heart in the margin of the duty roster, which is why the rest of us are now in trouble for defacing official paper.
Off the Cape we lost the second mate in a squall. Nobody saw him go. Tally sat on the rail for three days and would not come down for food or for calling. When the cutter came back empty, the dog got up, walked to the stern, and sat again with his back to the sea, and that was the end of his waiting. He had been counting something. Maybe the days, maybe the men.
We make Fremantle in a fortnight. I've asked the agent to find him a home with a family who keeps a yard and doesn't mind a quiet dog. I told them he's a good listener. I'm not sure I'll manage much listening myself, so I'm writing to you instead. Tell Mum the heart on the roster was meant for her, not the cook.
Your brother, Ray
