Drink cup with flowers on upper back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A glass of drink with a pink and white striped straw and a lemon wedge sits at the centre, with a tag reading HALF FULL in front of it. Purple and pink flowers with teal leaves and scattered black-outlined bubbles surround the glass. Bold black outlines define flat areas of bright colour, with light highlights on the glass and drink, and the design is centred on the upper back against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marisol had sold lemonade from the boot of a faded blue hatchback at the lay-by beside the border road for nine years. The lorry drivers queuing for the gate called her the Lemon Lady, mostly because she never charged more than a pound and always balanced a wedge of fruit on the rim of every cup. Her cooler was lashed to the back seat, and her hand-lettered tag hung from its lid on a loop of string.

On the Tuesday the barrier stayed down for three hours, and a Lithuanian driver named Tomas leaned on her folding table and asked whether her cups were half empty or half full. She tapped the tag. She had written it in marker years ago, when the trade was thin and she needed a reason to keep smiling. "Depends who's pouring," she said, and handed him the one with the pink and white striped straw, the bubbles still rising against the plastic.

He drank slowly, watching the queue inch forward and then stop again. Somewhere in the second hour he told her about his mother's garden, where the lemon tree had never once fruited in a Baltic winter, and how he had carried a jar of its dried peel across three borders in his coat pocket. Marisol topped up his cup from the jug without being asked. The barrier finally lifted at dusk, and Tomas pressed a coin under the tag and drove off without looking back.

When she packed up, the coin had slid to the bottom of the cup, and beneath it a scrap of paper read: Full enough. She folded it into the cooler lid and kept it there for the next long queue.
