Fawn and butterfly on the inner wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small standing fawn is shown in black ink with soft grey shading on the inside of a wrist, with its head turned towards the viewer. A small butterfly sits above its back, and the outlines are fine and softly blended. The photo is taken straight on, with the hand relaxed and a grey sleeve at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Abernethy had not asked for the fawn to be left in the orchard, but there it was on Tuesday morning, folded into the long grass beneath the damson trees as though it had been posted there. Its mother had gone over the wall at dawn, and the animal was too young to follow her, so it stayed where it was and watched the gate with those large dark eyes, its ears turned out like two cupped hands.

Her grandson Owen said to leave it alone. Everyone knew you did not touch a fawn, that the mother would not come back for a creature that smelled of toast and washing soap. So they left it, and every morning there was a small dent in the grass and a scatter of droppings by the wall, and every evening the fawn was standing a little nearer the back door.

On the fourth day a butterfly came down out of the hedge, a pale thing with its wings lifted, and settled on the fawn's back just above the spots. The animal did not flinch. It stood very still, head turned round to look at the visitor, as if it had been waiting for someone to notice how carefully it had been put together.

Owen photographed it on his phone and sent the picture to his mother in Leeds. She wrote back a single line: whatever you do, do not name it. He named it Tuesday anyway, and by the end of the week the fawn came when he whistled, and the butterfly, which nobody could explain, never once left its shoulder.
