Two arms rest side by side, each with a thin black constellation of single dots joined by fine lines. The left arm carries a gently curved chain of dots, and the right carries a angular cluster of dots and lines. The skin is pale and the background is neutral, with the ink as the only colour in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mairi Sinclair had copied the sky onto the back of the harbour ledger in pencil, dot by dot, because her father said a navigator who could not draw a star could not be trusted to find one. The Kestrel was due back off Unst before the fog lifted, and the only lamp that could guide her in was the one her brother Tam had promised to light.

Tam was out on the rocks with a paraffin can and a bad knee. He shouted up that the curved stars were the wrong way round, that the hook of the fisher's line bent towards the sea, not the land. Mairi pressed her thumb to the page where the angular cluster sat, three bright points joined by a crooked line, and told him that was the stern-light star, the one her father swore by.

They argued until the light went grey. Then the fog tore open in one long pull, and there over the water, low and steady, were both figures exactly as she had drawn them, the curve and the angle, pointing the same way across the Sound. Tam climbed the wall with the can and lit the lamp.

The Kestrel came in on the beam with her nets dripping and her crew too cold to swear. Mairi kept the pencil in her pocket after that. She never rubbed out a line she had got wrong. She only drew the stars again beside it.
