Fine line elephant on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant outline is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown from the front with a clenched fist raised above the arm. The design uses thin, single black linework with no shading, and the trunk curls up at the front while the tail extends at the back. The warm, yellowish light and plain background leave the ink as the clear focus, with a pink sleeve visible at the bottom of the frame.

Nobody at the reunion could say who had drawn the elephant first. It was there on the back wall of Form 4B the year the roof leaked, a single line of chalk that began at the trunk, curled up at the front like a question, and swept back to a tail nobody had bothered to finish. The teacher, Miss Pell, said it was the only thing in the room she had never been able to rub out.

Thirty years on, the old classmates came back to the hall with their car keys in their hands and their children asleep in the coats. They ate sausage rolls off paper plates. They argued about who had sat by the radiator. Someone said the elephant had been drawn by Terry Mott, who was dead now, and someone else said it was Ruth, who was not, and Ruth said nothing at all, only looked at the wall for a long time.

At the end of the night the caretaker came through with his mop and a tin of magnolia, meaning to cover the wall before the Council inspected. He stopped with the lid half off. Then he set the tin down on the stage and said that a thing drawn in one go was a thing that had decided to stay.

They left the wall as it was. Ruth walked home the long way, past the bus shelter, and when she got in she found an envelope on the hall table with the same curl pencilled on its back, though she could not remember picking up a pencil at all.
