Fine line figure with raised arm on a calf
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A single figure with short dark hair is drawn in delicate black linework, leaning forward with its torso turned away from the viewer. A tall, curving limb rises from the lower left of the design, and a banner-like band with lettering crosses the figure's back. The design is shown in black ink on a pale, hairy calf against a plain white background.

Wenna had the banner half unrolled before the wind came off the beeches, and it snapped out of her hands like a live thing. She stood on the stile with her hip pressed against the cold post and watched it bellow over the field towards the lych gate. The paint was almost gone. Her grandmother had painted the words the spring the mill closed, and rain had taken most of them since.

Nobody in Hollin's End read the banner any more. They knew it by its shape, the way they knew the ash that leaned over the churchyard wall with one limb raised towards the road as if asking for a lift. Every Harvest Sunday the banner went up on that limb, and every Harvest Sunday the vicar pretended not to notice the rope had frayed. Wenna had climbed the ash twice that summer to check the knots.
This year the limb cracked in the night. She heard it from her bed, a sound like a gunshot wrapped in wet wool, and by dawn the top of the ash lay across the lane with the banner still caught in its fingers. She went out with a saw from the shed, expecting to cut it free and bury it. Instead she found the lettering on the sagging cloth, just legible in the low sun, and read it aloud to the empty lane for the first time in her life.
The words were a name, a date, and a single instruction: keep climbing. She folded it small and carried it home under her arm, leaving the tree where it had fallen. By evening the whole village had come to stand at the wall to see what she would do, and she went up the stile, tied the banner to the stump, and let the wind have it.
