You have been sent to fetch the tallest cat in Carrowmere, and the tallest cat is sitting on the chapel roof with its back to the whole town, which is how it prefers to receive petitioners. The palace clerks have lost three messengers to its indifference. Take the north stair, mind the lead flashing, and do not look it in the eye until it asks you to.

The cat is called Ostrin, and it was the first thing the old queen ever commanded and never obeyed. Beside it, leaning so close their ears touch, sits the small grey one everyone calls Mistle, who came up the drainpipe the winter the river froze and has not come down since. Ostrin does not turn. It only lets its tail curl once around the other's flank, the way a bridge takes a load. You ask what the king wants. Ostrin says the king can climb up himself.

The king does not climb. The river is rising, the bells of the lower quarter have gone silent because the ringers fled, and the council wants every cat brought down for the flood barges, by decree. You carry the decree up the stair and read it aloud into the wind. Mistle's ears flatten. Ostrin's do not move at all.

When you finish, Ostrin rises slowly, turns its great head towards the water, and then, instead of going down, shifts its weight so that Mistle is sheltered between its shoulder and the chimney. Below, the first barges come in under the bridge with their lanterns lit. You sit on the lead beside them and wait, because the cats of Carrowmere have never once answered a question on the first asking, and neither, you suspect, will you.
