Fingerprint heart tattoos on feet
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A collage with two close-up photographs of a heart-shaped tattoo filled with fingerprint-like ridge patterns, and a wider photograph of two small solid black hearts on the ankles of bare feet against a wooden floor. The linework is fine and the fill is black with soft grey variation in the close-ups. The composition is simple, with the feet in the left panel and the detailed hearts stacked on the right.

Nell had the net across her knees when the boats came round the breakwater, and she knew from the way the gulls lifted that the Mary Rose was not among them. The net loft smelled of wet tar and cod-liver oil. Her mother's needle went in and out of the mesh without pause, because she had decided at dawn that work was the only thing that would not run off the edge of the day.

The Gannet came in at noon with only three men aboard. Skipper Dunn stood on the quay with his cap in both hands and told the women what the sea had taken, then went quiet about the rest. Nell watched the harbour clerk roll Dunn's thumb across the ink pad for the register, then roll it again, harder, as if the first print had come out wrong. Later she saw the clerk shake his head over the card and slide it into a drawer.
That night Nell sat with her own hands flat on the oilcloth and pressed her thumbs into the ink. Her brother Davy's whorls had always spread wide, like a coil dropped on deck. She drew a heart on the back of a spare slip and filled it with both their prints, her ridges running into his the way wake runs into the sea behind a hull, until she could not tell where one ended.
In the morning she took the slip to the tattooer on Lamb Row, who inked it small onto her ankle and then onto her sister Gwen's, because Gwen had asked for the same. Nobody ever asked whose print was whose. All summer the two hearts sat dark on their feet, and when the next boat came round the breakwater, Gwen walked the length of the quay barefoot, watching the water for a sail she knew would not come.
