Two small black fingerprint-pattern heart tattoos, one on each ankle, with close-up views of each heart on the skin.

Fingerprint heart tattoos on both ankles

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A collage showing two bare feet resting on a wooden floor, each with a small solid black heart tattoo on the ankle. Two close-up panels on the right show the hearts in detail, each filled with fine fingerprint-like ridge lines rather than solid ink. The ink is black, the photos have a warm, filtered look, and the feet fill most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last of the Blenheim windfalls had gone soft in the grass by the time Dad let me into the press shed, and that was where I found the ledger. Its pages smelled of wasps and tannin. Every picker had signed in with an ink pad, a thumb pressed beside their name, because Grandad always said a man could lie about his hours but not about his thumb.

I spent three evenings with a magnifying glass and a jar of Dad's sloe gin, tracing the whorls. Mrs Pargeter from the cottages had a loop that opened like a fern. Young Ted Lusk, who went off to France and never came back, left a tented arch with a scar running through it like a split in bark. I copied the ones I could make out onto tracing paper, and found I had drawn a heart without meaning to, the ridges crowding down towards a point at the bottom.

When I took the sheet to Dad he didn't ask what it was for. He pulled a barrel lid off the stack, rolled his own thumb across the ink pad on the bench, and pressed it down slowly beside the others, the way you'd settle a sleeping child. Then he dusted it with flour so it wouldn't smudge.

The cider that year came out cloudy and sharp, and nobody in the village could say which barrel was ours. We knew, though. Every lid carried a thumb somewhere, and the heart I'd drawn was still lying on the bench, made of people who had pressed down and then walked off into the orchard rows.
