Floral vine anklet tattoo in pastel pink and blue
Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo
Two photographs show the same ankle from different angles, with a thin vine of pink roses, buds and small blue flowers wrapping around the ankle like a band. The linework is fine and delicate, with soft shading on the petals and green leaves. The palette is pastel and the composition is centred on the ankle against plain light backgrounds.

Brother Anselm had the cuttings in a basket on his hip when the abbot's bell began, so I took them from him at the gate and carried them across the wet cloister myself. They were pink roses from the old wall, the kind nobody had pruned since the great frost, and the stems were so thin they bent like wire.

We bound them in the lay workshop that afternoon. Sister Hild wanted the vine to run in one unbroken loop, the way the old chapter books draw a garland around the margin of a psalter, so she set a bowl of water on the bench and showed me how to lay the buds so they faced outward. Forget-me-nots went between the roses, pale as a Sunday sky, and she would not let me use anything darker than a grey-green leaf.
Hild was the one who measured the finished band. She held a length of linen against her own wrist, then against the hem of her habit, and frowned at the sum. A cord, she said, should sit where a person can feel it and forget it at once. I laughed and told her the brothers would never wear anything but wool. She only smiled and tied the last knot where it would hide beneath the cloth.
When the frost came back in November, I found the basket still on the bench, and the roses had kept their colour in the cold. I left them there for the novices to find. Nobody asked me where they had come from, and I did not tell them.
