Four-leaf clover on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a four-leaf clover with a curling stem sits on the upper back, just below the shoulder blade. The linework is a single consistent black line with no shading, and the petals are open loops with the stem curving downward to the right. The soft, blurred background and the shallow focus keep attention on the tattoo against the bare skin.

The padlock on the Victoria Park gate had been cut in the spring and nobody at the council had got round to replacing it, so at eleven past ten on a wet Tuesday Maureen Pryce let herself in with a torch in her coat pocket and her knees already complaining. The grass under the lamps was the colour of wet cardboard. She knelt by the bench where her husband used to eat his sandwiches and began parting the clover one leaf at a time.

Three leaves. Then three again. Her grandson had told her on the phone that luck was rarer than a fox in a bin, and she had laughed at him, but the trouble with a four-leaf clover was that you could only find one by refusing to go looking. Her eyes kept drifting to the lit window of the chip shop across the road, where a lad in a paper hat was wiping down the counter, and to a bus pulling away with nobody aboard but the driver's reflection in the glass.

Just past the drinking fountain, where the streetlight gave out, a thin stem curled up out of the dark. One leaf unfolded from it, then a second, then a third, and a fourth that sat a little apart from the others, stubborn as a child refusing to hold hands. She did not cry. She had cried on this bench since March and was tired of the taste of it. She took one photograph with her phone, then picked the stem clean at its base and pressed it between the pages of the hymn book in her bag.

She walked home the long way, past the shuttered shops and the bright windows of the flats, with one hand resting on her bag like she was carrying something that might still wilt.
