Four script lettering designs reading You are my sunshine
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the phrase You are my sunshine written four times, each in a different lettering style on a plain white background. The first is a thin, spidery cursive, the second a bold brush script with large capitals, the third a flowing copperplate-style script with an ornate Y, and the fourth a simple handwritten print with upright letters. All four are rendered in solid black with no shading, and they are stacked loosely down the page with varied spacing.

The fourth time Maureen tried the pen on the back of the pharmacy receipt, the ink ran dry halfway through the word sunshine, so she turned the paper over and started again on the clean side. Her son had asked for the message in four hands, one for each of the lettering books he kept sending her from the shop on Cable Street, and she had agreed mostly to be rid of him for an afternoon. Now the kitchen table was covered in her attempts, each one leaning a little further from the last.

The spidery one looked like something a spider had written in its sleep. The brush one shouted. The copperplate Y she liked best, though she could not get the loop to close without her wrist shaking, and she had learned her letters in a schoolroom where a wrong stroke earned a rap across the knuckles. The plain print she managed easily. Upright, sensible, the letters stood on their own feet like children lined up for register.
When the bus stopped outside at six she had four lines and a smudge of blue on her thumb. She folded the receipt around them and put it in her coat, meaning to post it to him with the photographs of the bungalow and the bread recipe. Later that night, reading the wrinkled paper under the lamp, she saw that the print version had come out sideways across the bottom, as though the sunshine had been trying to leave the page, and she decided that was the one she would keep.
