Fuzzy black soot sprite on a heel
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a round, fuzzy black character with two large white eyes, thin black arms raised to its sides and two thin legs. A green star sits on top of its head. The linework is clean and outlined, with the black fill giving a soft fuzzy texture, and the green is limited to the star.

Nobody on the Harrow Pass believed me about the soot until the stove went out in January. I kept the signal hut at the top of the tunnel mouth, and every winter the old iron stove turned cold by Candlemas, when the wind came off the scree and rolled snow over the rails. That year the coal bunker was empty by the twentieth, and I was sitting with my hands under my armpits when the first of them crept out from behind the grate.

They were no bigger than a fist, round and black and furred like a wet dog's ear, with two white eyes that rolled whenever they looked at me. There were eleven. They made no voices I could hear, only a tick and a rustle, and they carried lumps of coal in their thin arms the way a child carries a stolen apple, grinning and terrified at once. The one at the front wore a chip of green glass on its head, a star the size of a bean, and it kept touching it like a ticket.
I should have sent them away. Instead I watched them feed the stove until it roared, and when the late goods train came grinding up at dusk with its lamp guttering, I could not see the track at all. The sprites scattered into the white. The star-bearer went last, leaping from sleeper to sleeper, and it stopped at the far signal post, planted itself there and held its green light up over its head until the driver saw it and braked.
In spring the stove was full again, and the bunker was never empty after that. I still leave a scuttle of coal by the grate every night. Some mornings there is a little green star lying on the step, and I have never once thrown it away.
