God with us script lettering design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single line of handwritten script reads God with us, followed by a full stop, set on a pale textured paper background. The linework is thin and even, with a looping flourish at the start of the word God and a short tail at the end of us. The black ink is set low in the frame with plenty of empty space around it.

The lift in Kestrel House had been broken since Tuesday, so Maureen Okafor climbed to the eleventh floor with a shopping bag in each hand and her pen case tucked under one arm. Her nephew had asked her to letter the wall of the new café on the ground floor, and she had said yes before she thought about the stairs.

She spread the paper on the kitchen table of flat 1104 and tried three nibs before she found one that would hold a thin line. The phrase was short: God with us, and a full stop. Her mother had written it in the front of every Bible in the house, always with the same looping start to the G, and Maureen had practised that loop until her wrist ached at fourteen. She wrote it once, then again, then a third time, leaning close so the lamp didn't throw her hand's shadow across the ink.
On the fourth attempt the tail on the final word came out right, one unhurried stroke that stopped short of the edge, as if the writer had meant to say more and then thought better of it. Maureen set the card against the sugar bowl to dry. Below the window a child was shouting up at a balcony, and somebody's radio was playing a hymn tune badly.
She carried the finished copy down eleven floors the next morning, past the broken lift and the stairwell that smelt of bleach, and handed it to Tunde at the café door. He held it up to the light. "That's proper," he said. "Where did you learn to write like that?" Maureen took the card back, thought about her mother's hand, and didn't tell him she had been practising it ever since.
