Geometric · Colour · Flash

A flash sheet of gold metallic temporary tattoo designs on a white background. The designs include bands of leaves, quatrefoil chains, diamond lattices, chain links and a Moroccan-style tile pattern, alongside round medallions and two wing-like shapes. The metallic gold fills and clean geometric outlines are arranged in rows and clusters across the sheet.

The tile seller's shutter came down at eleven, but you were still on the wrong side of it, sorting tins of gold leaf by lamplight while Mr Okonedo counted takings in the back room. The alley off Corvin Street smelled of diesel and oranges. Somewhere above, a wireless played the same dance band it had played all week.

The commission had come through the window that afternoon. A woman with a torn carrier bag wanted her grandfather's tile pattern copied onto a sheet of transfers, every quatrefoil exact and every chain link unbroken. She asked you to make them shine the way they had in the old hall, and she slid a photograph across the counter. You recognised the lattice at once, the lozenges meeting at their corners the way the bathhouse floor had once met them, before the bathhouse became a car park.

By two in the morning the sheet was finished: leaves climbing in a braid, quatrefoils strung along a thread of chain, diamonds stacked like scales, and two wings pinned to the corners. You pressed the foil down with the back of a spoon, peeled the backing away, and held the sheet up to the bulb. Every line held. It looked less like a copy than a door that had been waiting for someone to open it.

When you went out at dawn to deliver it, the woman was already waiting on the steps of the closed hall with her hands in her coat pockets. She took the sheet without a word and studied the wings for a long time. Then she pressed one flat against the inside of her wrist, where the gold caught the first grey light and kept it.
