Grumpy Bear under a rain cloud
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A blue cartoon bear with a scowling face sits beneath a grey rain cloud with pink-purple shading and drips falling from it. The bear has bold black outlines, soft blue and grey shading, and small heart motifs on its belly and foot. The word GRUMPY runs across the bottom in blue block lettering, and the design is centred on a limb of bare skin.

Mrs Pim had asked for a cloud that would shelter the bunting, not one that would follow the bear round the bandstand. Harold Deacon, who ran the Saturday weather stall on Wrenmouth Pier, said so loudly enough that the whole queue heard, and the cloud gave a small grumble of thunder in answer.

The bear sat on the bench with his arms folded and his cloud pressed down on his ears like a wet flat cap. Nobody had told him he could leave. He had been made, Harold explained, from a sad week in February and a leftover sack of cotton wool, and sadness is slow to clear once it has found its shape. Children stopped to stare at the drips. A dog sniffed the puddle forming under the bench and sneezed.
Then the brass band struck up a waltz, and Mrs Pim, who had danced at the Pier Ballroom in 1958 with a man who never once smiled, stepped out onto the boards in her good shoes. The bear watched her. He watched her spin under the bunting, skirts flaring, rain coming down on her shoulders and her laughter going up over it like a kite.
The cloud thinned to a single grey feather. Harold swore he saw a heart drawn in the damp on the bear's belly, though the bear swore he had not moved at all. By the last chord the puddle had gone and the bench was dry, and the bear was tapping one blue foot against the boards, scowling at nothing in particular, which was as close to dancing as he would ever admit to.
