Handwritten lyric lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A handwritten lettering design in black ink on a pale background, set out over several lines of uneven script. Key words such as sleepwalking, night, lost, broken and right are drawn larger and with underlines or star marks, while the smaller connecting words are more compact. The design is entirely black linework with no shading or colour, and the lines fill the frame evenly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pull your chair nearer the urn, and mind the draught from the gents, because this is a night story and the night does not care to be hurried. My grandfather kept the signal box at Thornbury Junction when the last northbound still stopped after midnight. He swore there was a woman who came down the platform stairs every night at two, barefoot, with her hair down and her hands full of other people's trouble.

She never spoke when she was awake, and she was never awake when she came. She went straight to the lost property hatch and lifted out the umbrellas nobody had claimed, the single glove, the child's wooden horse with one wheel gone. Then she went along the platform touching every cracked lamp glass as if she were checking a fever. My grandfather followed her once with a torch, meaning to wake her gently, and she turned round and said, quite clearly, 'Not yet, the night's not finished with me.'

He stopped trying after that. He only watched. Each morning the mended things sat on the bench outside the waiting room, the glass whole, the horse with two wheels, the glove paired with its twin, and chalked above the stationmaster's door was a little star with a line through it, the way a clerk marks a ticket as used.

The lamp by the ticket barrier still burns brightest of all, and nobody has ever found out whose it was that she was mending.
