Heart with two figures on the wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A heart outline is formed by two stylised figures with rounded heads and shoulders, and a smaller heart sits inside it. The figures and outer heart are shaded in black and grey with soft gradients, while the inner heart is filled with teal. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist against a plain pale background, with the hand visible below.

The big top at Harrowgate went to a scrap man in March, so now the rigging hangs from two lorries in a wet field outside Lincoln. You still climb it every morning, because Marnie says a rope that isn't climbed goes stiff. She wraps the chalk in an old sock, tests the swivel with her thumb, and tells you to stop looking at the gate, as if it might open and show you the people who used to fill the stands.

Pell, the ringmaster, comes out at noon with his coat buttoned wrong and a folder under his arm. The bank wants the wagons, he says, and the horses are already sold to a farm in Wales. You ask whether anyone has told the public. He laughs, not unkindly, and says the public stopped being a question years ago. You watch Marnie's hands tighten on the bar until her knuckles go as pale as the canvas.

On the last night there are eleven people in the stands and a spaniel that wanders out to the ring to take a bow. You go up first. At the top you hang by your knees and reach down, and Marnie leaves the platform with her arms open, and for one long second you are both only weight and trust. Then your fingers close on her wrist and the eleven stand up anyway, because that is what an audience does when it has paid.

Afterwards, packing the last crate, you find the little teal bead she sewed into the ribbon of her costume, the one she swore was lucky. It has come loose and lies in the sawdust, catching the work lamp. You close your hand around it and leave the tent standing empty behind you, the rope still swaying, the bead still warm.
