Heartbeat line with heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a thin, single-line tattoo on the inner wrist. The design begins with an outlined heart on the left and continues into a jagged heartbeat trace running across the skin. The ink is dark and the lines are even, and the tattoo sits over a page of an open textbook showing an ECG diagram.

The grid paper came up from the coast in a crate stamped KEEP FLAT, and by the time Mistress Orla unpacked it, the ink had already faded at the edges of the squares. Nobody in Caddow Keep could read the thing except me, which is how I came to be the one who told the old king his road was running too fast.

The trace was a range of jagged peaks on a tilted page. Each small box was a wedge of time, four hundredths of a second, as the manual put it, and I counted them with a brass ruler while the royal physician hovered at my elbow, pretending not to watch. The peaks were sharp and the valleys shallow. "It is a road," I told him, "and something is driving it at a gallop."

He asked me to make it a map he could carry. So I drew it the way we draw every map in Caddow: a small heart at the starting point, where the first traveller sets out, and then the unbroken line running east across the parchment, up over every hill and down into every valley, without once lifting the pen. Cartographers never mark the hearth of a town in the middle of its streets. They mark it at the gate.

When the king rode north that spring, the chart hung in the chapel above the altar, dark and even. The lamp-boys said that from the road, if you squinted, the mountains looked like someone's pulse running across the land, and that the king never once looked back at it, though he always knew precisely where he had begun.
