Heartbeat line with a heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black fine-line tattoo shows a heartbeat trace that rises and falls across the inside of a wrist, with a small heart outline formed in the middle of the line. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The hand is raised toward the top of the frame, and a blurred laptop keyboard fills the background.

Sit closer to the oven, you, the flour's still warm and the night's got teeth. My grandmother kept the ovens at the Dunmore Street bakery for forty winters, and she used to say a loaf tells you it's ready by the sound it makes under your knuckle. Hollow. Not dead, hollow. That's a heartbeat, if you listen right.

Nobody on the street believed her until the winter the power failed. Mr Achterberg from the chemist came down at four with a folded trace from his father's hospital bed, a jagged line of peaks and valleys sharp as a garden fence. She laid it on her marble bench and drew a floury finger along it. That's bread rising, she said, and that's bread falling, and it's only a good loaf if it climbs and then comes back down to rest.
Then she drew a small loop in the middle of the line, the way a baker signs the first tray of the day. Mr Achterberg laughed till he coughed. But he took the paper home, and when his father died in March he kept it folded in his coat. I'm told the little heart is still there, inked over the pencil, because nobody could bring themselves to rub it out.
Now the ovens tick and the first van idles outside. Go on, put your knuckle to that crust. Hollow. The trays won't wait for us to be sad about it.
