A thin black outline of a heartbeat trace runs across the leg, with a small heart in the centre and three filled paw prints placed above and below it. The linework is clean and even, and the paw prints are solid black with no shading. The ink is black only, set against plain skin and a dark background with a white towel at the bottom edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every night the fair pitched on the same flat field outside Spalding, and every night before the lamps were lit, the grey lurcher called Mab walked the length of the midway with her nose low, checking each booth the way a steward checks a ship. Nobody had bought her. She had come with the Harrisons' caravans thirteen summers before, and she had never once been paid for.

Tom Harrison, who did the strongman act, kept a hand-cranked pulse tester beside his tent, a brass box that drew a wavering line on waxed paper for a penny. Children paid to see their heartbeats, and the line always came out jagged and bright. When Mab grew slow on the wagon steps, Tom started cranking the box beside her basket each evening. Her line came out small and steady and sure, and he tore each strip off and folded it into his waistcoat pocket.

One November the field turned to soup and the fair packed up early. Tom found the last strip in the basket, folded small, the trace running in three slow peaks with a tiny heart drawn in its middle. Beside it, in pencil, someone had pressed three paw prints, one for each of the nights he had sat up with her. He did not say anything to the other showmen. He only tucked the paper inside the lid of the brass box and carried it to every fair after that.

The next summer a pup with Mab's grey coat came padding down the midway before the lamps, nose low, checking every booth. Tom lifted the lid of the box, saw the folded paper still there, and cranked the handle once for luck, just to hear the drum turn.
