Hello Kitty character with script lettering

Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon character Hello Kitty in a bold black outline with a white face, one eye winking, a large pink bow on her head and a pink dress, with one paw raised. The words Hello Kitty are written above in black script lettering. The linework is smooth and uniform, and the pink fill is solid, with little visible shading. The design is centred in a tight crop of skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The van had stood outside the chip shop on Quay Street since Tuesday, grey primer blotched across its doors, and the gulls had decided it belonged to them. Marjorie Pell watched them from the kerb with a tin of pink enamel in one hand and a three-pound brush in the other. Her brother had promised the van would be a proper advert for the bakery by the weekend. He had not promised she would be the one painting it.

She started with the outline, because her hand knew outlines better than fills. A head as round as a dropped bun, two ears like folded envelopes, a whisker line that ran off the edge of the door as if the cat had somewhere better to be. Then the eyes. She gave one a closed crescent of black and left the other wide open, because a cat who winked was a cat who knew something. Mr Okafor from the ironmonger's leaned on the railings and said it looked like a cat that had been up to mischief. "It has been," Marjorie said. "Yesterday it got into the flour."

By dusk she had painted a bow, two fat loops of pink, and a small paw lifted beside the face, ready to wave at whoever came past. Then she ran out of enamel. She sat on the step with the brush across her knees and lettered the words along the top in looping script, her tongue between her teeth the way her mother used to scold her for. The letters leaned forward as if they were late for something.

Dennis drove off at seven the next morning with the window down. Halfway to the bypass a boy on a bicycle lifted his hand, and the cat on the side of the van lifted its paw back, as though it had been waiting all week for someone to notice.
