The big top has a hole in it now, the size of a bathtub, right above the ring, so the rain falls on the trapeze every night and the tent men shrug and call it atmosphere. You are the last act left on Halloran and Sons Travelling Show, which makes you the cat's keeper, and the cat is the only thing still pulling in children. Mrs Pim sews the cat's bow every Tuesday with a needle she keeps tucked in her hair. The cat is white as a cold teacup, and her red ribbon never sits straight.

Halloran wants autumn bookings, so Mrs Pim makes the cat a new uniform: a violet cap, a violet dress, and a little heart stitched where the ribbon ought to be. She hands you the props herself. One is a blue plastic syringe that squirts coloured water. The other is a tin labelled TEST STRIPS that rattles with sherbet lemons. "Keep her smiling," she says, "and keep her off the cold steps." At dawn you practise in the empty stands, the cat balanced on your forearm, the pair of you bowing to nobody.

On the last night, in a Shropshire field gone to mud, a girl of about seven leans on the rope and asks why the cat is dressed as a nurse. You tell her nurses are the people who stay awake when everyone else has gone to bed, and that the cat has been doing that for the whole show. The girl nods as though this is perfectly reasonable, and the cat, for once, sits up straight.

Afterwards the lamps go out one by one. You fold the violet dress into a tea chest and find the blue syringe still half full, so you squeeze it over the dying embers and they hiss. Beyond the hedge a lorry starts up, and the cat's bow, finally, slips loose and drops into the wet grass.
