The bosun wanted to know about the apple first, which tells you what a ship values. I had been cook on the Marisol Vane eleven days when the stevedores swung a crate up from the hold and the slats split to show a yellow tricycle, its front basket holding one glossy red apple. Tucked under the bell was a card in looping pencil: For the galley. Keep the pantry shelves clear.

Nobody claimed it. The engineer swore it wasn't his, the purser said it wasn't on the manifest, and Pim, the deckhand, just grinned and said the white cat with the red bow on the handlebars had never once asked permission. So it stayed in the galley corner, between the flour bins and the mop bucket, and every morning the apple had gone and a fresh one stood in its place, polished on somebody's sleeve.

I stopped sleeping well. At two bells one night I heard the squeak of wheels in the passage, and I crept out with a rolling pin like a fool. A girl of about six was pedalling in her nightdress, bow wobbling, both feet barely reaching the pedals. She went very still when she saw me. "It's not stealing," she said. "I bring you the apples. Grandad's the engineer. He says the galley is the warmest room on the ship."

I didn't tell the bosun. I left the kettle on, and in the morning there was a drawing of a cat on a tricycle, pinned to the pantry door with a single red apple tucked beneath it.
