Small Hello Kitty tattoo on the wrist
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A small cartoon Hello Kitty face is tattooed on the inner wrist of a hand resting on a dark countertop. The character is drawn in a simple black outline with no shading, and the bow above the right ear is filled in solid red. The photograph is taken from above at an angle, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

Listen, then, because it is late and the trams have stopped and the only thing still awake on Lantern Row is the rain. There was a cat who lived above a sweet shop in a city that smelt of wet coal and hot sugar. She had no mouth, which the shopkeeper's wife thought a great shame, so she had never once been able to say what she thought of anybody. People talked at her all day. What she had instead was a bow, a red one, tied on the left side of her head the way a girl ties a ribbon before her first dance. The bow did all the talking. When the baker's boy pinched a bun, the bow went stiff as a poker. When the widow on the second floor wept over her letters, the bow drooped like a tired flag. Everyone in the street could read it. Only the cat pretended she couldn't.
One winter the sweet shop closed for good, and the cat went out into the dark with nothing but her black outline and her bow. She walked the length of the canal, past the gasworks, past the bridge where the old men sold roast chestnuts from paper cones. At the last lamp she found a girl sitting on an upturned crate with her coat buttoned to the chin, not crying, only waiting for a train that had already gone. The cat sat down beside her and said nothing at all.
The bow lifted, very slightly, and stayed lifted until the sky above the factories turned the colour of weak tea and the first milk cart rattled past. The girl looked down, saw the red ribbon catch the light, and laughed for the first time that night. That was the whole of the cat's speech, and it was enough.
