Outlined paw print on the inner wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small paw print is drawn as a single pale outline on the inner wrist, made up of four toe pads and a larger main pad. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink appears near white against the skin. The composition is tight on the wrist, with the fingers with silver nail polish and one zebra-striped nail visible above and a blue fabric at the edge of the frame.

Our Tess came up the drift at shift change with the lamp men, sooty to the ears, and went straight to the washhouse step as if she owned the place. Nobody told her otherwise. Her feet were the colour of the seam, and every morning after that she left a print on the whitewashed doorstep, four toes and one fat pad, and the wives swept round them rather than over.

Dad said a collie had no business below ground, but Tess had worked the roadways with him for three winters and found bad air before the detector did, sitting down hard at the mouth of a junction and refusing to budge. The overman laughed about it until the fan stopped. After that she had a tin plate with her name scratched on it hanging by the lamp room, and a blanket that smelled of tallow and wet wool.

The night the roof came down at the Ninth, she was not on shift. Mam kept her in the back kitchen with the door shut. We heard her scratching at the boards long after the bell had gone, and then she stopped. In the morning there were prints across the lino, going out to the yard and back again, fainter each time, as if she had been working out which way the men had gone.

I still keep the limewash brush on a nail by the back door. Each spring I paint the step white, and every spring her prints come back through the paint, pale and patient, waiting for someone to tell them it is time to come in.
