Colour tattoo of a Hello Kitty face with black whiskers, eyes and a yellow nose, below a shaded red bow, on the side of a ribcage.

Hello Kitty face and red bow on ribs

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the simplified face of the Hello Kitty character, with black eyes, three whiskers on each side and a small yellow nose, with a shaded red bow above. The black linework is bold and even, while the bow uses red ink with soft highlights and shading to give it volume. The design sits centrally on the side of the torso, with a grey garment and a plain background framing it.

The lamp must be wound every third hour, and Mrs Honeysett's knees have long since given up on the iron stairs, so the work falls to you. You are a white cat with a red bow at your ear, a bow she tied herself on the morning the relief boat stopped coming. Nobody on Gannet Rock has ever asked whether a cat can keep a light. You simply climb at midnight with the oil tin rattling on the rungs and the wind pulling your whiskers straight.

The fog comes in before the second watch, thick as wet wool, and somewhere past the Skerries a fishing boat is calling for a lantern. You pad the gallery with your tail held high and count the lens turns the way she taught you, one, two, three, until the beam swings out and back and out again. The boat's engine coughs, then answers. Below, Mrs Honeysett sits up in her chair and says your name to the empty room, the way she does when she wants you to know she is still counting too.

By first light the Marigold noses into the harbour with her nets streaming. The skipper's boy climbs the path with a pilchard wrapped in newspaper and leaves it on the step, bowing to the door as if it were a church. You wash the salt from your face on the warm glass of the lamp room. In the curve of the lens your reflection sits small and stern, a white face and a red bow above the light like a stubborn little sun.
