Cluster of cats on the thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo shows six cats packed closely together, with heads and bodies overlapping and a small bow or knot at the centre. The linework is even and thin, with no shading, and the ink is black on pale skin. The design fills the frame, with the thigh curving across the photo and a grey fabric edge visible at the top.

The cats came in through the bakery's back window on a Tuesday, which Mrs Okonedo said was the second time that month and the last. I was the one who had to climb the drainpipe after them, because I was the only one of us who fitted through the gap above the flour sacks.

There were six of them, all the same grey as the wet pavement outside, and they had clearly decided among themselves that the crate of day-old rolls was theirs by right. One sat on the scales. One was inside the cash tin, which was not a thing I had known a cat could manage. The other four had bunched together on the flagstones in a knot of tails and ears, each one leaning on the next as though the whole pile might topple if any single one moved first.
I tried to shoo them. They did not move. I tried bribing them with the crusts, and they ate the crusts and still did not move. In the end I sat down on an upturned bucket and waited, and after a while the knot loosened, one by one, and they filed out through the window in the order they had come, the one from the cash tin last, with a torn length of red ribbon hanging from its collar like a tiny bow.
Mrs Okonedo found me still sitting there at six. She looked at the empty crate, then at the ribbon I had picked off the floor, and she laughed until she had to hold the counter. Next morning there was a saucer of milk on the step, and a note in her looping hand that read: pay them in rolls, they are not thieves, they are a family.
