The van came up the headland road at half past four, the way it always did on the first foggy Tuesday of the month, its mint roof dripping in the spray and its striped wheels spitting gravel onto the grass I had not mowed since Easter. I was on the gallery with the brass polish when I heard the chime, that thin tinny tune that sounds like a music box left out in the rain.

Dennis Fairweather had driven that van for thirty-one years and never once got lost, though everyone on the coast swore he would one day drive it off the cliff chasing a sale. He parked with two wheels on the cliff path and leaned out of the hatch, the sprinkles on his big cone sign catching my lamp as it swept round.

"Two cones for the lamp room," he said, as if we had an order in. "Strawberry for you, pistachio for the light. It likes pistachio." I told him the light had no mouth. He told me that was why it never complained about the price.

I climbed down with the tin of coins, and as I handed him the money the beam turned over us both, painting the pink walls gold for one long second before it swung out to sea. Dennis licked his thumb, counted the coins twice, and drove off down the hill with the chime fading into the fog, which is how I knew the lamp had been paid up for another month.
