Ice cream cone tattoo on skin

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon ice cream cone with two scoops, one teal and one pink, each decorated with small gem shapes, and a pink flower on the top scoop. The outlines are bold and the shading is flat with simple highlights, giving a playful, graphic look. The tattoo is centred on a light skin area, with partial lines from another tattoo visible at the left edge.

You have the ovens lit by four, and the shutter still down on Harbour Row when Mrs Okafor's van backs up with the milk churns. The flour sacks have gone damp again. Your hands find the work before your head does: scraper, marble, the radio turned low to the shipping forecast, a tray of rolls going in while the street outside is still black.

Nobody comes to a bakery for ice cream, but Dilys left you her chest freezer when she retired to her sister's in Penzance, and inside it are two tubs of mint and one of rhubarb that she swore would outlast the end of the world. On Saturdays you scoop them into cones for the first boats in. Pink for the rhubarb, teal for the mint, and on top a sugar gem you snap from a sheet of spun toffee so it catches the lamplight like the stones in the cabinet at Pearce's pawnshop.

Yesterday a man in oilskins asked for a double, with the flower. You told him you didn't do flowers. He tapped the glass where the pink sugar blossoms sat in their paper cups, and you realised Dilys had been making them for years, a little rose on every cone she sold to a stranger, and had never once said why.

So you pipe one now, slow, while the gulls start up over the wall. The cone is the only thing on the counter still cold to the touch. You set it in the window facing the water and let the first light come through the sugar, and wait for the bell over the door.
