Infinity heart with script name on wrist

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of an infinity symbol with an open heart outlined in blue on the left loop. The black script lettering reading Christian runs diagonally across the centre of the design. The thin blue linework and solid black script sit on pale skin, with no shading visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, the rain won't stop for you. You want ribbon or you want the story? Nobody comes to Harrowgate Market on a wet Tuesday for ribbon. Mrs Pargeter had this pitch before me, forty years under the green awning, and she sold the blue silk by the yard, the kind stitched into christening bonnets. Every Thursday a lad called Tom Ashdown came by with his sixpence and asked her to write a name on the card that came folded round it.

One Thursday in March he asked for something she'd never been asked for. He wanted the loop drawn lying on its side, the way a figure eight lies when the sea's gone flat, with a heart pressed against the left-hand bend, and a name running clean through the middle in the looping hand she used for her price tags. She told him it was a daft notion. He said his sister was sailing for Lisbon on the Friday boat, and the heart was for her, and the name was for the boy who'd stayed behind to mind their dad's shop.

Mrs Pargeter wrote it with iron-gall ink, the sort that bites into the paper and doesn't lift. She wrapped the card round a length of blue silk and gave it him for nothing. Tom folded it into his coat and went off up the hill with the rain coming sideways, and nobody on this market saw him again that spring.

Forty years on, I found that card in the drawer of her old table, the blue gone soft as a moth's wing. The heart had faded to a whisper of colour, but the name was still as black as the day she wrote it. Rain's never once got the better of that ink. Pass me your coin, love, and mind the drip off the awning.
