Infinity heart with thick and thin script

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink tattoo showing an infinity loop shaped into a heart outline, with the words thick and thin written in cursive script inside and across the loop. The linework is smooth and bold, with solid black fill in the strokes and no shading. The ink sits on pale skin against a blurred, darker background, and the design is centred in the frame.

The snow had come down thick on the Hollin Pass the morning Mabry Ketch set out with her goat and her brother's debts, and by noon the path had vanished under it. Her neighbour Ruan followed a rope of knotted wool behind her, and neither of them spoke, because speaking let the cold in.

At the cairn where the road bent, the wind dropped and the air went thin as skimmed milk. Mabry sat down on a flat stone and said she could go no further. Ruan took her hands and counted her breaths aloud, the way his grandmother had taught him, until she counted along with him. The goat lay down beside them like a sensible creature.

They walked on like that for a night and a day, the one rope passed from palm to palm. When they reached the inn at Carrow Gap, the keeper found them frozen to the same length of wool and would not believe they had not planned it.

Mabry paid her brother's debt with the goat's wool, and Ruan never asked her for the rest. Each spring they walked the pass again, once in mist and once in clear sun, and the keeper's children, who had heard the story a dozen times, still asked which of them had been thick and which thin. Nobody ever agreed.
