Dear Tom,

The six-forty was late again, so I have time to write properly. Mr Pryce on the platform says the points at Hallow Junction have iced over since Tuesday, and the stationmaster has stopped pretending otherwise. I counted thirty-one trains from the bench by the clock, and not one stopped for me, which is fair enough, as I wasn't carrying anything anyone wanted.

Mum sent the pocket watch back with the carrier. It still runs fast, the way Dad left it, and I keep meaning to set it right and never do. Tell her I am eating. Tell her the urn in the waiting room is held together with string, and that Mrs Dacey has taken to calling me the Admiral, which I am choosing to hear as a compliment.

I found your old timetable in my coat, the one with the loop you drew around Hallow and Coldharbour when we were nine. You said the line bent back on itself so the trains could never really get lost, only lose their way for a bit and come round again. We went through thick and thin on that branch, didn't we, fishing for tickets under the seats and running for the milk train. I think you were right about the curve.

So I'll be on the platform for the last train on Friday, and I'll keep the watch wrong on purpose so I'll know it's you when the lamps come round the bend.

Nell
