By the third week of October the Marwick Travelling Show had sold everything that could be sold, and the rest had gone to a scrapyard outside Hull. Everything except the wire. Nobody wanted a figure-eight of steel cable strung between two towers, so Dad left it up for the buyer to deal with, and I kept climbing it at dusk to sit where the loop crossed itself.

The act had never been much. Mo and Pip, the striped twins, juggled chestnuts and argued over the last one. Bramble, the pink fellow with the tail that never stopped unrolling, rode a unicycle he never quite mastered. Three small green visitors from the Sorrel lot worked the winch, and Hob, the one-eyed green brute, lifted the cannon every night and set it down so gently nobody in the front rows ever flinched. Dimity, the blue creature with ears like sails, did the fire, badly, and laughed at herself until she coughed.

On the last night the buyer's men came early with their lamps. I told them the wire was staying. They didn't argue; they'd seen me up there in every weather. So we ran the show one more time for an audience of Dad, a man eating a pie, and two boys who had climbed the fence. When Hob set the cannon down, Pip's last chestnut rolled off the platform and came to rest right at the crossing point of the wire, and I thought that was what the loop was for. Whatever reached the middle came round again.
