Infinity symbol with Disney characters

Colour · Flash

A coloured pencil design drawn on a pale background shows an infinity symbol formed by two looping lines decorated with flowers. Cartoon Disney characters sit along the loops, including Chip and Dale, Piglet, three green alien toys, Mike Wazowski and Stitch. The word infinity disney is written in script between the characters, and the soft colours are applied in a light, sketchy style.

Nothing left in the cloakroom at the Palais is ever claimed. Umbrellas, one glove, a tin of barley sugar gone soft. So when you lock up on the second Thursday of October and find the lost property box tipped out across the counter, you blame Harkin the caretaker, who has a habit of rummaging when he thinks nobody is watching. But the things have been arranged, not dumped. They run in a long looping line, the way you would sort sweets into a figure of eight, and the three little green aliens from the arcade sit right at the bend, as if they have been posted there.

The next Thursday the line is longer. A stuffed Stitch, blue and furious, props up a ticket stub from 1962. Two wooden chipmunks have appeared at the top of the loop, one with a hat, one without, and someone has tucked a pink plastic pig into the lower curve. You stop pretending it is Harkin. You start leaving things out on purpose: a brass button, a child's mitten, a bus pass from a route that no longer exists. By the third week the loop has closed, and a one-eyed green fellow sits in the middle of it, looking alarmed to find himself here at all.

On the last night of the season the band from Hull plays its slowest foxtrot, and the couples on the floor move in the same long curve, round and round, never quite breaking out of it. You carry the box up to the stage and tip it out beside the drum kit. The bassist laughs, picks up the pig, and turns it over in the spotlight. Nobody claims a thing. But the loop holds, bright and crooked, the way it did on the counter, and you let it stay there until the lights go down.
