Pink shaded feather with black script reading love and family inside an infinity symbol, tattooed on the forearm.

Infinity symbol with feather and script words

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

An infinity symbol drawn in fine black script line runs across the forearm, with the word love on the left loop and family on the right. A pink feather with soft grey shading lies across the centre of the symbol and casts a faint shadow beneath it. The black lettering is crisp and flowing, while the feather uses smooth tonal gradients, and the composition is centred on the forearm against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had the last of the pink paint on her thumb when the generator coughed and the whole Brennan's Travelling Fair went dark for the length of a breath. She didn't look up. She was lettering the name board of the big wheel by the light of a paraffin lamp hung from a nail in the caravan door, and her hand knew the curve of an S without being asked.

Her brother Tomasz had come back from Hull that morning with a bag of wet feathers from a poultry farm and a face that wouldn't say what had happened. Their mother had died in March. The fair had gone on without a stop, from Boston to Skegness to a village near Mablethorpe where the sea wind ripped the awnings loose, and every night Dilys sat on the steps and tried to write something on the back of a ticket stub that wasn't a list of prices.

"Two words," Tomasz said, dropping onto the step beside her. "She'd have wanted two words, not a sermon."

So she wrote them with a sign-writer's brush loaded with black, looping the lines out and round the way their mother had signed birthday cards, the word love curling into the left-hand loop and family running up and over into the right. Where the two loops crossed she laid a feather in red-pink, its vanes soft as breath, the shadow pooled beneath it like a small dark lake.

Tomasz held the lamp steady. Neither of them said that the sign had no beginning and no end, or that the feather was the only thing on the board that would move if the wind came up. The wheel turned over in the dark, the bulbs blinked back on, and the word family caught the glare as if it had always been there.
