Infinity symbol with hearts on a wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black outlined infinity symbol sits across the wrist, with a cluster of small hearts on each loop. The hearts on the left loop are pink and green, and those on the right are blue and teal, with smooth solid fills. The photograph is taken at a slight angle with warm skin tones and a soft, even light, and the hand is cropped at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had shut the pass for nine days when Marta Hollin came down the stairs of the Crooked Lamb with a hank of green wool in one hand and her mother's shears in the other. Her brother Tobias was still at the window, counting carts that were not coming.

"Give it here," said Mrs Aske, the carter's widow, who had slept by the stove since the second night and held opinions about everything. She wound the wool twice around her fingers and tied it into a figure of eight, the loop lying on its side like a sleeping eel. "My grandmother knotted one for every house on this road. Whoever is tied in never gets lost."

Marta asked what the hearts were for. Mrs Aske pulled three scraps of cloth from her apron pocket, a pink, a bit of green, and two blues, and began stitching them to the loops. "Hearts are the people who slept under the roof," she said. "Each one you feed, you lend a little of your own colour. Pink and green for the ones who came in half frozen. Blue for the ones who went on before dawn."

Tobias came over at last and asked which heart was his. Mrs Aske said none of them, that the loop had no end to hold anyone by. Outside, the wind dropped. By noon a bell was ringing at the foot of the hill and the first wheels were grinding up through the slush. Marta pressed the finished knot flat under the salt cellar and left it there, both loops full, for whoever came next.
